In the Beginning 4*
1 And Adam knew his wife Eve and she conceived and bore Cain, and she said, "I have produced a son with the LORD." 2 And again she brought his brother Abel to childbirth. And Abel was a tender of sheep and Cain was a worker of the earth. 3 And it was in the course of time (and) Cain brought some of the fruit of the earth (as) an offering to the LORD. 4 And Abel also brought from the firstborn of his flock and from their fat, and the LORD heeded Abel and his offering. 5 But he did not take Cain and his offering with favor. And Cain was very angry and his face fell. 6 And the LORD said to Cain, "Why did you become angry and why did your face fall?" 7 If you do well, won't you be accepted? And if not, sin is lying at the opening of the tent. Its desire is for you, and now you must rule over it." 8 Cain spoke to Abel his brother. In the day they went into the field, Cain even seized Abel his brother and murdered him. 9 And the LORD said to Cain, "Where is Abel your brother?" And he said, "I don't know. (Am) I my brother's keeper?" 10 And he said, "What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood (speaks) to me from the ground." 11 And now you (are) cursed from the ground which opened its mouth to receive the blood of your brother from your hand. 12 For you will work the ground (and) it will no longer yield its strength to you, and you will be a fugitive and wanderer on the earth." 13 And Cain said to the LORD, "My punishment is greater than I can bear. 14 Now you have banished me today from the face of the earth and I will be hidden from your face and I will be a fugitive and wanderer on the earth, and he who finds me will kill me." 15 And the LORD said to him, "No! On anyone who kills Cain vengeance will be taken sevenfold." And the LORD put a mark on Cain, not to kill the marked one, for all who came on him. 16 And Cain fled from the face of the LORD and settled in the land of Nod** in the east of Eden. 17 And Cain knew his wife and she conceived and bore Enoch. And he built a city and called the city's name like the name of his son Enoch. 18 And to Enoch was born Irad and he fathered Mechuel and Mechuel fathered Methushel and and Methushel fathered Lamech. 19 And Lamech took two wives. The name of one (was) Adah and the name of the second (was) Tsillah. 20 And Adah bore Yaval. He was the father of those who dwell in tents and (have) cattle. 21 And the name of his brother (was) Yubal. He was the father of all who deal with lyre and flute. 22 And Tsillah, she also bore Tubal-Cain. He was the craftsman of all bronze and iron. And Tubal-Cain's sister was Naamah. 23 And Lamech said to his wives, "Adah and Tsillah, heed my voice, wives of Lamech, listen to my speech, for I killed a man for bruising me, a youth for striking me. 24 If Cain's revenge (is) sevenfold, then Lamech's seventy-sevenfold." 25 And Adam knew his wife again and she bore a son and called his name Sheth, for (she said), "God gave me seed after Abel, for Cain murdered him." 26 And to Sheth a son was born, and he called his name Enosh, since at that time people began to call on the name of the LORD.

1 This (is) the book of the genealogy of Adam.
