According to Matthew 1: 1-17: The Genealogy of Jesus Christ
1 A book of the lineage of Jesus Christ, son of David, son of Abraham. 2 Abraham gave birth to Isaac, and Isaac gave birth to Jacob, and Jacob gave birth to Judah and his brothers, 3 and Judah gave birth to Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez gave birth to Hezron, and Hezron gave birth to Aram, 4 and Aram gave birth to Amminadab, and Amminadab gave birth to Nashon, and Nashon gave birth to Salmon, and Salmon gave birth to Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz gave birth to Obed by Ruth, and Obed gave birth to Jesse, 6 and Jesse gave birth to David the king.
David gave birth to Solomon by the wife of Uriah, 7 and Solomon gave birth to Rehoboam, and Rehoboam gave birth to Abijah, and Abijah gave birth to Asaph, 8 and Asaph gave birth to Jehoshaphat, and Jehoshaphat gave birth to Joram, and Joram gave birth to Uzziah, 9 and Uzziah gave birth to Jotham, and Jotham gave birth to Ahaz, and Ahaz gave birth to Hezekiah, 10 and Hezekiah gave birth to Manasseh, and Manasseh gave birth to Amos, and Amos gave birth to Josiah, 11 and Josiah gave birth to Jechoniah and his brothers at the time of the carrying off of* Babylon.
12 But after the carrying off of* Babylon Jechoniah gave birth to Salathiel, and Salathiel gave birth to Zerubabbel, 13 and Zerubabbel gave birth to Abiud, and Abiud gave birth to Eliakim, and Eliakim gave birth to Azor, 14 and Azor gave birth to Zadok, and Zadok gave birth to Akim, and Akim gave birth to Eliud, 15 and Eliud gave birth to Eliazar, and Eliazar gave birth to Matthan, and Matthan gave birth to Jacob, 16 and Jacob gave birth to Joseph, the husband of Mary, out of whom was born Jesus, the one called Christ.
17 Therefore all the generations from Abraham until David are fourteen generations, and from David until the carrying off of* Babylon are fourteen generations, and from the carrying off of* Babylon until the Christ are fourteen generations.
*to makes more sense here, but I am confused about why Matthew chose the genitive case rather than the dative.

According to Matthew 1: 18-25: The Birth of Jesus Christ
18 And the birth of Jesus Christ was thus. His mother Mary was engaged to Joseph, (but) before they came together she was found pregnant by the holy spirit. 19 But Joseph her husband(,) being upright and not wishing to disgrace her, intended to divorce her quietly. 20 But thinking about these things*(,) behold an angel of the lord was revealed to him in a dream saying to him, "Joseph son of David, do not fear to receive Mary your wife: for by her will be born that of the spirit which is holy. 21 She will bear the child, and you will call his name Jesus: for he will save his people from their sins. 22 And this took place to fulfill what was said by the lord through the prophet(,) saying,
23 Behold the virgin who has in her womb and who bears a child, and they will call his name Immanuel, which is translated God with us.
24 And Joseph got up from sleep (and) did as the angel of the lord had commanded him and took his wife. 25 And he did not know her until she bore a child, and they called his name Jesus.
*Greek has 'his' after 'these things', but I can't figure out where that fits into the sentence.

According to Matthew 2: 1-12: The Visit of the Wise Men
1 And (when) Jesus* was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold wise men from the east came into Jerusalem 2 saying, "Where is the one how has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star in the east and we came to worship him." 3 But (when) Herod heard this he was troubled(,) and all Jerusalem with him, 4 and (when) the high priests and experts in the law of the people met together he asked them how the Christ is born. 5 But they said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea: for thus was written through the prophet:
6 And you(,) Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, by no means are you least among the leaders of Judah: for out of you will come a leader who will tend my people Israel.
7 Then Herod secretly called the wise men (and) determined from them the time of the star's appearing. 8 And sending them into Bethlehem he said, "Going(,) make a careful, accurate search for the child: but as soon as you find (him), tell me, that going I might worship him. 9 But they(,) hearing the king(,) went and behold the star, which they saw in the east, led them, until going it was fixed above where the child was. 10 And seeing the star they rejoiced greatly (with) much joy. 11 And having come into the house they saw the child with his mother Mary, and bowing they worshipped him, and opening their treasures they presented gifts to him, gold and incense and myrrh. 12 And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.
*Greek has the genitive case here. How does that fit?

According to Matthew 2: 13-15: The Flight to Egypt
13 But going their way behold an angel of the lord appears to Joseph in a dream saying, " Rousing the child and his mother(,) take (them) and flee into Egypt and stay* there until I tell you: for Herod intends to seek the child in order to kill him. 14 And he(,) rousing (them,) took the child and his mother at night and went away into Egypt, 15 and he was there until Herod's death: that what the lord said through the prophet might be fulfilled(,) saying, "Out of Egypt I called my son."
*The Greek verb is 'know, understand, perceive'. How does this fit into the sentence?

According to Matthew 2: 16-18: The Slaying of the Infants
16 At that time Herod seeing that he had been deceived by the wise men was exceedingly furious, and sending out (men, soldiers) he killed all the children in Bethlehem and in all her neighborhoods from two years old and lower, according to the time that he had found out from the wise men. 17 Then what was said through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled(,) saying,
18 I heard a voice in Ramah wailing and much mourning: Rachel wailing (for) her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.

According to Matthew 3: 1-12: The Preaching of John the Baptist
1 And in those days John the Baptist arrived preaching in the desert of Judea 2 [and] saying, "Turn from your sins: for the kingdom of heaven is approaching." 3 For this is the writing through Isaiah the prophet(,) saying,
A voice crying out in the desert: 'Prepare the way of the lord, straight make his paths.
4 And John himself had a garment of camel hairs and a belt of leather around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. 5 Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the surrounding region went out to him, 6 and he was baptizing them in the Jordan river(,) by him confessing their sins.
7 But seeing this many of the Pharisees and Sadducees came to the Baptist* (and) he said to them, "Offspring of snakes, who warned you to flee from the coming anger? 8 Therefore you will make a worthy crop of repentance**(,) 9 and not thinking to say to yourselves, "Our fathers are from Abraham." For I say to you that God is able out of these stones to raise children for Abraham. 10 But already the axe is standing at the root of the trees: therefore each tree (that) does not make a good harvest is cut down and thrown into the fire. 11 Indeed(,) I baptize you with water into repentance, but he who comes after me is more powerful than me, of whom I am not worthy to remove the sandals: he will baptize you in the holy spirit and fire: 12 of whom the winnowing shovel is in his hand and threshes out his grain(,) and he will gather his grain into the granary, but the chaff will burn in unquenchable fire.
*Greek has 'his' after 'Baptist'. How does this fit? **This clause seems to be at odds with the rest of the message.

According to Matthew 3: 13-17: The Baptism of Jesus
13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John to be baptized by him. 14 But John tried to prevent him saying, "I have need to be baptized by you, and and you come to me?" 15 But answering Jesus said to him, "Allow (it) now, for it is fitting to us thus to fulfill all righteousness. Then he allows him. 16 And having been baptized Jesus immediately came up from the water: and behold heaven opening [to him], and he saw [the] spirit of God descending as a dove [and] coming on him: 17 and behold a voice out of heaven saying, "This is my beloved son, in whom I delight."

According to Matthew 4: 1-11: The Temptation of Jesus
1 Then Jesus went into the desert by means of the spirit to be tested by the devil. 2 And he fasted forty days and forty nights, then he was hungry.
3 And coming the tempter said to him, "If you are God's son, tell these stones to become bread." 4 But he said(,) answering(,) "It is written,
Man does not live by bread alone, but on each word coming through God's mouth.
5 Then the devil took him into the holy city and set him on the highest point of the temple. 6 And he says to him, "If you are God's son, throw yourself down: for it is written that
He commands his angels concerning you and they lift you up with (their) hands, lest you strike your foot against a stone.
7 Jesus said to him, "It is also written, 'Do not tempt the lord your God.'" 8
8 Again the devil takes him to an exceedingly high way and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their fame. 9 And he said to him, "I will give all these to you, if bowing you worship me."
10 Then Jesus said to him, "Go, Satan, for it is written:
Worship the lord your God and him alone serve.
11 Then the devil left him and behold angels came and cared for him.

According to Matthew 4: 12-17: The Beginning of the Galilean Ministry
12 And hearing that John had been arrested he withdrew into Galilee. 13 And leaving Nazareth going he lived in Capernaum beside the sea in the territories of Zebulun and Naftali: 14 in order that what was said through Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled(,) saying,
15 Land of Zebulun and land of Naftali, way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the gentiles, 16 the nation living in darkness has seen a great light and those living in the country and shadow of death(,) a light dawns on them.
17 From then (on) Jesus went preaching and saying, "Turn from your sins: for the kingdom of heaven approaches."

According to Matthew 5: 13-16: Salt and Light
13 You are the salt of the earth: but if the salt becomes tasteless, what will restore flavor to it? It is still worthless except to be thrown out (and) trampled by men. 14 You are the light of the world. A city standing on a hil cannot be hidden: 15 no one lights a lamp and sets it under a basket, but rather on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In this way let your light shine before men, that they might see your good works and praise your father in heaven.
